Last year I totally thought that Mother’s Day was the first Sunday of May. I had a doctor’s appointment that Saturday at 1 pm, but I decided afterwards that I would drive from Milan to Naples that afternoon to surprise my mother that Sunday morning. The weather was rainy as I set out on the high, but the further south I got, the more the clouds broke up until a rainbow appeared over the hills of Tuscany. As I continued driving and the sun went down, a full moon gradually rose, turning into a super moon (meaning that the moon appears to 30 times bigger than usual.) I was about a few exits from Naples conversing on the phone with a friend when it was brought to my attention that Mother’s Day was the following weekend. None the less I bought my mom flowers and surprised her Sunday morning. She was even more surprised than she would have been if it were Mother’s Day because she was definitely not expecting it. It was one of the happiest times I had seen her those past years. Sadly, she passed away from cancer three weeks later.
In December 2012, I moved to New York City to enter the Master Make-up Artist program at Make-up Designory. In the first week of May, I received word of a position open in Times Square by my house and I decided to apply for it. With the help of my counselor Lisa, I was able to tweak my resume and send it in to the hiring manager. Within 45 minutes of sending it, I received a call inviting me in for an interview the following day. The interview went great and I was then invited to do a live demo two days later.
The next day was Saturday, coinciding with the same day last year when I decided to drive to Naples to surprise my mother for Mother’s Day. Roughly the same time I set out on the road last year, I receive a phone call from Bare Escentuals offering the position I had been interviewing for. Yesterday was my first day.
I’m not a big believer of ghosts, spirits, etc., but how can I not think that there is some kind of correlation between the two events corresponding exactly a year apart at the same time?
The closer it gets to May 30, marking the one year anniversary of my mother’s passing, the more I sense her presence, for I have many of the same personality traits as her. One such trait is being stubborn until getting what she wants. I have been just as stubborn in my pursuit of becoming a make-up artist, and while technically I have arrived, I still want more. However, this is a good place to start. ~Sean
